10 Daily Tips to Staying Organized
I know, you have worked hard since January getting organized in your home. Am I right? Did you binge watch Tidying Up? Pin all the Home Organizing Ideas on Pinterest? Trust me, it’s a lot of hard work going through your bedrooms, kitchen, living room(s), bathrooms and garages in your home. But the problem is staying organized. It so easy to rest on your laurels so to speak and before you know it, everything is back to the way it was. I’ve got you covered. Here’s 10 daily tips to staying organized. 1. GET A PLANNER
If you don’t have one already, get a good calendar that can help you keep your appointments, activities and school/personal events in clear sight. Take time every week to counsel with your family and get things on the calendar
2. MAKE A TO DO LIST EVERY DAY
When you get it onto a paper, it clears your mind. Set the priorities for the day and it will help keep you focused. It also helps you feel accomplished. Don’t make it too long and do the hard things before the fun things. Stick to the things you have to do and be willing to push some of the less important things to another day or week
3. MAKE YOUR BED EVERY MORNING
Make your bed upon rising. An unmade bed is a sign of a disorganized life. The sooner you make you bed, the better you feel about facing your day. Leaving your bed unmade gives you permission to leave clothes on the floor, towels not hung up, make up on the bathroom vanity etc. You leave a trail through the house. Start the day right and get it done now instead of another chore to face later in the day.
4. PUT THINGS AWAY WHEN FINISHED WITH THEM
Cleaning as we go is a lot easier than having to come back to it hours later. Unstack the dishwasher early and it can be filled easily all day. It takes a few minutes to clean up when you have a sink filled with hot sudsy water as you prepare your meals. Keep a container of antibacterial wipes under sinks to wipe up bathrooms and counters as you leave them.
5. PLAN YOUR MENUS WEEKLY
It takes a few minutes to plan your meals, but once a week is all it takes. It will decrease trips to the store and you can prepare your meals early, with all ingredients on hand. Also, take advantage of online grocery ordering. All you have to do is swing by and they load it in your car. Game changer for families with young kids/babies, plus there’s not as many extra’s loaded into the cart. There even some cute sheets that go with the planner
6. KEEP A DONATE BIN BY YOUR DOOR
Even though you’ve gone through everything, you still come across things that need to be thrown out or donated. Even if you resell, get it out of the rooms/drawers and house. Don’t think “later”, do it now. Clothing with stains, rips or that’s too small needs to be gone now.
7. TAKE 10-15 MINUTES EACH NIGHT TO RESTORE ORDER
I know you’re tired and would rather put your feet up in front of the TV, but I can promise you, if you make it a habit, it will make the next morning so much easier! Have your kids do this in their rooms prior to bed. Motivate with a treat before bed for a job well done!
8. ENLIST THE HELP OF FAMILY MEMBERS/SPOUSES/PARTNERS
Did I leave anyone out? Everyone who lives in the home needs to be responsible for some of the upkeep. Chore charts work great for assignments and keeping track, even for adults. I have a free one available here. Have an extra list for those motivated by money and pay them for doing more. Be firm in the hard things being done before the fun. It takes 21 days to develop new habits so don’t be dismayed!
9. MAKE SURE EVERYTHING HAS A PLACE
This goes back to getting organized to begin with. Drawers are our friends as well as little boxes or bins in each room. If there’s a place for it, it’s much easier to complete the task, clean as you go and put things in their place. I promise you! If you have an upstairs in your house, keep a basket at the bottom that you take up when you go so there isn’t stuff on each stair (yes, I’ve been there)
10. REWARD YOURSELF
At the end of the day, or week or after Saturday chores, schedule a fun activity; dinner out, ice cream or a fun video. We all like rewards for the things we put effort into. It makes the sacrifice worth the effort.
I can promise you that over time, these tips will become habits and your home will stay more organized and free up time to do things you’d rather do. Don’t get discouraged and beat yourself up. Summer is just around the corner and encouraging these habits will allow the fun things to take place. You’ll be happier coming home to order by putting a little work in first.
