DIY No Sew Patriotic T-Shirt

I have to say I love this time of year.  The warmer weather and summer holidays brings family together with great food, activities and a fun summer t-shirt!  It’s fun to dress in our patriotic colors and celebrate the day outside.  So here’s to our Patriotic Celebrations this summer with a DIY No Sew Patriotic T-Shirt!

American and Canadian!

As you can see, I’ve made this post into 2 styles, the American flag and the Canadian  flag as well.  I have family in both countries so I’m creating for those north and south of the 49th parallel!

Use buttons and ricrac as your medium on a plain white t-shirt. Picking up inexpensive white t-shirts makes this an easy project that can be put together quickly. Even the kids can make their own!  So let’s get started with our DIY No Sew Patriotic T-Shirt!

Supplies:

 Canadian Flag:

US Flag:

Directions:

For the US Flag T-Shirt:

  • Put a piece of cardboard or paper between the layers of your t-shirt.  I’d hate to see your shirt glued together:)
  • Cut three or 4 pieces of ricrac or ribbon.  I used 4 on the larger size.  Two long and two short.

  • Using Aleene’s Fabric Fushion apply to the back of the ricrac or ribbon and place on the shirt.  You can use strips of heat and bond if you prefer and iron them in place
  • Using Aleene’s Fabric Fashion put a large dot of glue to to the back of each button and put in a 3 x 3  or a 12 button more random pattern.  Let dry a few hours or overnight
  • Finished!

For the Canadian Flag T- Shirt:

NO SEW

  • Print off the  Maple Leaf template and position it under the first layer of the t-shirt, centering it.
  • Gather your red buttons.  Place them on your t-shirt to form a button maple leaf.
  •  Once you have your buttons in place, take a small bottle of Aleene’s Fabric Fusion and put a small large dot of glue on each button to hold in place.  Let it dry for a few hours or overnight
  • Finished!

****If you choose to sew the buttons on your t-shirts, put a small dot of glue on each button so you can sew them in place.  Especially with the buttons on the Maple Leaf, they’ll stay better if sewn in place after a light drop of glue. If choosing to sew your ribbon or ricrac in place, you can use small dots of glue to hold (or sewing pins) and sew in place with a zig zag stitch with matching thread.  Tuck the ends of your ribbon/ricrac in so they don’t fray***

Have fun with this project.  Kids can do it too!  Great for family gatherings or reunions for a fun craft.

Enjoy,

Cheryl
