Easy to Sew Bell Sleeve Linen Dress

First off, no, you don’t have to use linen to make this dress.  I had some cute (very cute) linen and it’s summer so it went without saying, BUT, this can be made for all seasons.  In fact, make it out of a light denim and make it a bit shorter as well to pair with leggings that will take you from fall through spring.  It would also look great in a fun abstract fabric that would pair well with some boots/booties as well through the cooler seasons.  I love this Easy to Sew Bell Sleeve Linen Dress.

I seem to always have ideas swimming around in my head and this one took shape, literally, from seeing a cute dress online from Talbots.  I’m not sure it’s even a recent one but loved the look.  It’s a little more fitted and I wasn’t sure I wanted to add a zipper to this dress (lazy….well maybe)

Anyway, it was adorable.  I may make one similar later on out of a light denim.  (Did I say iheartfabric?)  I did a few sketches and decided I also wanted a little “V” in the neckline. I hadn’t done a bell sleeve before so watched a few tutorials on you tube and did it!  It involved a little math and was impressed at the different ways that were shown.  My favorite was DIY Tiered Ruffled Sleeve Tutorial  from a woman from Africa (I’m guessing from her accent and dress)  I love the way she folded and marked.  Anyway, let’s get to making the Easy to Sew Bell Sleeve Linen Dress!

There are a few things needed for this dress.  The pattern I have for you is size 8 so do some measuring before so you won’t be disappointed.  It can be made larger and smaller.  I bought 3 yards of gorgeous linen and got a steal of a deal at Joann.  I used under 2 yards.  It was wide enough that I could get each side of my dress from the width.

  • Fabric:  I got this Orange/White Flowered Linen at Joann.  I used 2 yards
  • Sewing Machine: I did a little homework for you.  If you don’t have a reliable sewing machine and have a little to invest, the Brother CS6000i kept coming up in the top 3 easy to use/reliable sewing machines for entry level pricing.  I bought a Kenmore when I was first starting.  I still remember it cost me 199.00 and it lasted me forever (Rachel, still using it?).  Simple to use and not much could go wrong.  All my boys used it as well.
  • Serger:  I love the Brother 1034D and it’s recommended as one of the easiest to use!
  • White Thread (or matching thread to your fabric)
  • Sewing Scissors
  • Straight Pins
  • Rotary Cutter, Ruler and Mat (optional but makes the job easier)
  • Free Pattern and Instructions (You’ll need to subscribe(scroll to the bottom of this post) to have access to my Resource Library

The directions are really simple to follow.  I also have a video I made to walk you through each step.  Just download (and print) the free pattern and instructions for the Easy to Sew Bell Sleeved Linen Dress.  If you have any problems, just contact me at cheryl@homemadebycheryl.com.  I’m here to help (and talk you down off that sewing ledge)

One of the important steps in this pattern is cutting it out.  You’ll need to determine how long you want your dress to be (including 1-1.5″ for hemming).  Measure from your shoulder to where you want the dress to end.  This is one piece for the front and one piece for the back.  I also made mine a slight A-Line by adding 3″ to the bottom sides to taper it from the chest to the hem.  It wasn’t much but makes a difference.  You can also do more!

Enjoy this simple dress to sew.  Again, choose a fabric you love and have fun along the way!  Easy to follow directions, pictures as well as a video!   Also, I apologize at how rudimentary these scanned illustrations look now that I have them done.  It looks like food and fingerprints are all over them.  Oh brother but it’s what I have (and maybe who I am right now:))  I also want to thank my photographer at a moments notice, son, Evan for his help getting the pictures of this cute dress.
