Summer Fun Beach Reads

It’s coming and aren’t you excited?  Summer.  The time to kick back, set the rules to the side and enjoy the freedom of schedules.  Summer vacation, whether it’s time at the beach or by a pool, don’t you love to sit back and read a book?  Sunglasses on, a cool drink at your side, the sun shining down and a slight breeze to take some of the heat off.  Yup, I’m talking ‘you’ time.  So what’s in your beach bag?  What book have you brought along to take your mind off present things?  No idea yet?  Here’s my first list this year. Here’s a Free Printable for easy reference.  The Summer Fun Beach Reads List.

‘Go To’ Authors

There are a lot of books out there, many of which I’ve read.  I have some standard beach book authors that I love to read, curl up and get lost in the pages.  Here’s a list of those ones.  Some have brand new books out this year and some are just classics that you love to read again.  See what you can find to bring a smile to your face this summer.  You can find them online, reserve at your library or download in digital form to listen to.  That’s my new favorite.  Put the headphones in and listen (no trying to lay on your front and read and no sunglass lines (please suntan responsibly and use sunscreen:))  I have a free printable that you can download to take with you.  Let’s begin:

    1.  Mary Alice Monroe
The Summer Guests (new): From the New York Times bestselling author of the Beach House series comes a heartwarming and evocative novel about the bonds and new beginnings that are born from natural disasters and how, even during the worst of circumstances—or perhaps because of them—we discover what is most important in life.
      Other Recommended Books:
      The Summer Girls (series)

      The Beach House  (series)
    2. Nancy Thayer
Surfside Sisters (new): A Nantucket woman returns home to find that reunions aren’t always simple, in this heartwarming novel.
      Other Recommended Books:
      A Nantucket Wedding
      Secrets in Summer
      The Guest Cottage
    3. Mary Kay Andrews
Sunset Beach (new): Drue Campbell’s life and career have recently been derailed.  The only thing she has left is the house her mother left her: a ramshackle beach bungalow with a missing roof in the once-sleepy town of Sunset Beach, which is rapidly becoming a hot spot for the rich and well-heeled, who are none too pleased about the shabby eyesore in their perfect neighborhood.
      Other Recommended Books:
      High Tide Club
      The Weekenders

      Beach Town
    4. Dorothea Benton Frank
Queen Bee (new): A woman wounded by her past comes to Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina to find new meaning in life and to find herself. As she takes up a new hobby of beekeeping, she begins to come into her own and rebuild her life.
      Other Recommendations:
      By Invitation Only

      Same Beach Next Year
      Sullivan’s Island (series)
    5. Elin Hilderbrand
Summer of ’69 (new):  Welcome to the most tumultuous summer of the twentieth century! It’s 1969, and for the Levin family, the times they are a-changing.
      Other Recommendations:
      Perfect Couple
      The Island
      The Identicles
      The Summer Affair (series)
    6. Wendy Wax
My Ex-Best Friends Wedding (new): Prized and stored away for safekeeping, the timeless ivory wedding dress, with its scooped neck and cleverly fitted bodice, sits gently folded in its box, whispering of Happily Ever Afters. To Kendra, Brianna, and Lauren it’s a reminder of what could have been, the promise of a fairy tale, and a friendship torn apart. But as Kendra knows firsthand: it wasn’t the dress’s fault.
      Other Recommendations:
      Ten Beach Road (series)

      Magnolia Wednesdays
    7. Lisa Wingate
Before We Were Yours:  A family living on a small shanty boat on the Mississippi’s life is torn apart and Rill must fight hard to keep them together
      Other Recommendations:
Sea Glass Sisters – Carolina Chronicles (series)
      Tending Roses (series)
    8. Jenny Colgan
Little Beach Street Bakery: A quiet seaside resort. An abandoned shop. A small flat. This is what awaits Polly Waterford when she arrives at the Cornish coast, fleeing a ruined relationship.
      Other Recommendations:
Summer at the Beach Street Bakery
Christmas at the Beach Street Bakery
    9. Robyn Carr
The View from Almeda Island (new):  From the outside looking in, Lauren Delaney has a life to envy—a successful career, a solid marriage to a prominent surgeon and two beautiful daughters who are off to good colleges. But on her twenty-fourth wedding anniversary Lauren makes a decision that will change everything.
      Other Recommendations:
      Sullivan’s Crossing (series)
      The Life She Wants
    10. Karen White
Dreams of Falling (new): On the banks of the North Santee River stands a moss-draped oak that was once entrusted with the dreams of three young girls. Into the tree’s trunk, they placed their greatest hopes, written on ribbons, for safekeeping—including the most important one: Friends forever, come what may.
      Other Recommendations:
The House on Tradd Street (series)
      Learning to Breathe
      The Sound of Glass

I could go on and on.  I know Karen White isn’t a ‘traditional’ beach read but she has some great books and a fun series to read through.  Same with Jenny Colgan.  She’s a British writer and has some really fun series to read (including this one)  Some of her stand alone novels (Amanda’s Wedding) I didn’t finish because of the content and really bad language.  This isn’t so for her fun bakery series at all (sorry, being honest here).  I can take a little bit bad language in some books but because I listen to a lot of books on my phone, the overuse of bad language is offensive to me.

There are so many authors I love to read and so many that I haven’t yet.  Stay tuned, I have another couple of lists coming with good summer reads for you and ones you can read to your family:)  Remember to take the free printable for easy reference!
